Long Beach State outshot the Titans 16-12 on the night.
FULLERTON, Calif. – An early Cal State Fullerton goal would be enough for a tie for the Titans, as Long Beach State outshot CSF 16 to 12 but were only able to put home the equalizer in the second half from Dana Fujikuni.
Cal State Fullerton (3-7-2, 0-0-1 Big West) struck first, taking advantage of a giveaway in the Long Beach State defensive third, finding Atlanta Primus in the box to give the Titans a 1-0 lead in the third minute.
Long Beach State (5-4-2, 0-0-1 Big West) would hold the majority of the possession in the rest of the half, taking six shots and earning five corner kicks in total. Ashley Gonzales had a good opportunity in the 18th minute, just missing wide after getting into the box. Katie Pingel had another good opportunity in the 37th minute right at the top of the box on a good entry, but the junior's shot went just high of the goal as the Titans maintained the lead.
The Beach kept the pressure on in the second half, earning two more corners before a great chance in the 60th minute. Rola Badawiya was able to earn open space for a cross, finding Gonzales on the right side but the senior's header aimed for the corner instead went off of the bar.
Just following, Cal State Fullerton earned their first corner kick of the match, and the set piece led to a shot for the Titans but Imani McDonald was up to the challenge, making a great reaction save to keep the Beach within one goal.
The momentum swung towards the Beach with the 71st minute goal. Dana Fujikuni was able to create space for herself and a left-footed shot that clipped off of the far post and past Titans keeper Tianna Sanders to even the score at 1-1.
Long Beach State had good chances down the stretch as well. Rocio Rodriguez was able to work a good shot in the final minutes, and then a Taylor Bistline header off of a set piece in the closing seconds was saved by Sanders.
The Beach had a great chance in each overtime period as well. In the first, Ashley Gonzales was able to get Elysia Laramie behind the defense, but Sanders was up for the save, her fifth of the game. In the second overtime, Pingel took a shot that hit the crossbar and then deflected off of Sanders but out of bounds, keeping the score knotted at one.
Long Beach State will have the weekend off before continuing Big West play on the road next Thursday, October 4 at Hawai'i.
