The Beach rallied from one goal down for a 3-2 win in Honolulu.
HONOLULU, Hawaii – Long Beach State surrendered an early own goal, but recovered in strong fashion to claim a 3-1 road win at Hawai'i behind a pair of second half goals from Taylor Bistline and Sarah Maher.
Long Beach State (6-4-2) had some early opportunities to score, grabbing the momentum from kickoff. In the 13th minute, Kaylee Ramirez was able to find Ashley Gonzales behind the Rainbow Wahine back line, but Alexis Mata came up with the save, as she did minutes later on a shot on target from Rola Badawiya.
A long throw from Medeiros allowed Hawai'i (6-5-1) to take an early lead in the 23rd minute, as the throw into traffic would be deflected into the goal by the Beach for an own goal, giving the Rainbow Wahine a 1-0 edge.
A substitution in the 30th minute paid off quickly for Long Beach State, as a throw-in from Sarah Pilster was flicked on by Elysia Laramie for Katie Pingel, whose hard shot on goal slipped in to even the score at 1-1.
The Beach took the lead with just under twenty minutes to play on the third goal of the season from Bistline. Rola Badawiya tracked down a cross and sent a ball into the box which found Bistline's feet and the junior delivered, giving the Beach their first lead of the game.
Continuing the late pressure, a Sierra Castles header forced a diving save from Mata, and on the following corner, a header from Dana Fujikuni landed at the feet of Maher, and the senior scored off of the set piece for her first goal of the season and third of her career.
Hawai'i pulled back an additional goal in the final two minutes of play, drawing a penalty that was converted by Leialoha Medeiros, but Long Beach State closed out the final 90 seconds to head back to California with the win.
Long Beach State will return home next week for two matches, hosting Cal Poly on Thursday before taking on UC Santa Barbara on Sunday. Both games will be held at George Allen Field.
