Long Beach State outshot the Mustangs 26 to 4 on the night.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State dominated possession in the team's return to George Allen Field, outshooting Cal Poly 26 to 4 on Thursday night but it took until the second overtime for the Beach to claim the 1-0 victory, with freshman Elysia Laramie putting home the winner.
Just after the start of the second overtime period, Long Beach State (7-4-2, 2-0-1 Big West) worked down the right side, and after Dana Fujikuni chased down a cross the senior sent a low cross into the box that was flicked on by Rocio Rodriguez and knocked home by Laramie to give the Beach a deserved win over Cal Poly (1-11-4, 1-3-1 Big West).
The Beach was in control throughout the contest, allowing the Mustangs to rarely cross midfield, but Cal Poly survived an early flurry and pushed the game past regulation.
Shots came early and often for Long Beach State however, as Ashley Gonzales had an opportunity in the six-yard box in the opening minutes, and forced Sophia Brown into two of her seven saves with two shots in succession in the ninth minute.
In the 15th minute, Rola Badawiya just missed high on a solid effort and the Beach had two more shots quickly, finishing the first half with 11 in total.
Cal Poly, having withstood the early efforts of the Beach, leaned on Brown to make two saves down the stretch. Badawiya re-entered in the closing minutes of regulation, and forced the junior keeper into a diving save, and then Gonzales another good effort in the first overtime, putting her third shot on target again forcing Brown into a reaction save.
LBSU maintained the momentum, however, and brought home the golden goal in the second overtime to grab their third win in the last four games against Cal Poly.
Long Beach State remains at home for the next game and will aim to stay unbeaten in Big West conference action, hosting UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, October 14. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
