Sarah Maher’s second half goal was the difference in a 1-0 win over the Gauchos.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State had multiple opportunities to increase the final scoreline, but it was Sarah Maher's header in the 64th minute that proved to be the winner in a 1-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara on Sunday night.
Long Beach State (8-4-2, 3-0-1 Big West) had a strong opening half defensively, limiting UC Santa Barbara (9-6-0, 2-2-0 Big West) to two shots in the first half, neither on target and nearly took the lead in the closing minutes of the first half when a shot from Sierra Castles hit the post.
The game would open up in the second half in an exciting contest. After not facing a shot in the first half, Imani McDonald responded with two saves in the first ten minutes, the second against Cate Post a solid effort to keep the game scoreless.
The Beach continued to put pressure on the Gauchos, and the breakthrough make in the 64th minute. On a set piece following a UCSB yellow card, Chloe Froment's ball into the box was flicked on by Maher over Hanna DeWeese and trickled into the net for a 1-0 lead.
A frenetic few minutes followed, as Dana Fujikuni struck a shot that rattled off of the crossbar, and then LBSU earned a penalty kick while continuing to pressure UCSB. Rola Badawiya's effort knocked off of the post and out, and UC Santa Barbara remained just one goal down.
McDonald would come through with a third key save in the 73rd minute, and the Beach would go on to claim their second straight shutout and the fifth overall on the year.
The Beach remains unbeaten in Big West Conference play through four games, and has won three straight in league play.
Long Beach State will play two more conference games next week, playing at UC Riverside on Thursday night before returning to George Allen Field on Sunday, October 21 to host UC Irvine at 6 p.m.
