Long Beach State returns to George Allen Field Sunday for the Black and Blue Rivalry.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – In a defensive battle on Thursday night, the host Highlanders would be the team to break through in the second half to come away with a 1-0 win in Riverside.
Long Beach State (8-5-2, 3-1-1 Big West) had a number of opportunities early in the first half, forcing Annie Bailey into a pair of saves in the first 15 minutes, one each from Katie Pingel and Ashley Gonzales.
In the second half, the Beach again had the first shot but UC Riverside (11-2-3, 2-2-2 Big West) would take the lead in the 65th minute. Miah Conde's initial shot hit off the crossbar, and the resulting follow landed at the feed of Quinley Quezada for the Highlanders who scored the only goal of the contest.
Taylor Bistline and Rocio Rodriguez would put two more shots on frame for the Beach following the goal, but Bailey came up with both saves to maintain the lead.
The Beach had two more shots in the closing minutes, but the attempts from Gonzales and Pingel went wide as the Highlanders grabbed the win.
Long Beach State will return to George Allen Field on Sunday as the two top teams in the Big West standings will face off in a critical edition of the Black and Blue Rivalry with UC Irvine. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
