Ashley Gonzales scored her 34th career goal in the win, setting a new Long Beach State record.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Black and Blue Rivalry featured the top two teams in the Big West entering Sunday, and the Beach prevailed 2-1 behind goals from freshman Sierra Castles as well as a record-setting winner from senior Ashley Gonzales.
Imani McDonald stood tall for Long Beach State (9-5-2, 4-1-1 Big West) in the opening minutes as UC Irvine (8-6-3, 4-1-2 Big West) got an early opportunity on the counter, but McDonald made the first of her five saves on the night.
UCI would only take three more shots in the first half as Long Beach State would hold the majority of possession. Elysia Laramie would hit the crossbar on a header attempt, and then in the 36th minute, Kaylee Ramirez won back the ball in an advanced position. The junior whipped in an excellent cross, finding freshman Sierra Castles for the first assist and first goal for both, giving the Beach a 1-0 halftime lead.
Forward pressure would lead to the second goal for Long Beach State as well, the record-setting effort from Gonzales. UC Irvine goalkeeper Maddie Newsom attempted to play a ball out of the back but the ball deflected off of the forward, and Gonzales' speed and skill made the difference, dribbling around Newsom to give the Beach a 2-0 lead in the 68th minute.
The goal was the fifth of the season for Gonzales, and the 34th of her career, moving the senior out of a tie for the Long Beach State goals record with Janet Fettig.
Taking big chances in the final minute paid off for UC Irvine, as Newsom came forward into the LBSU box after a late free kick was awarded to the Anteaters. The goalkeeper was able to send the ball into the net to cut the lead to one in the closing seconds but it was too little too late for UCI.
With two games left in the regular season, Long Beach State is in line to capture its fourth regular season Big West Championship with two wins, as well as secure the top seed in the upcoming Big West Tournament. First up for the Beach is a trip to UC Davis on Thursday, before returning home to host CSUN on Sunday, October 28 for Senior Day.
