Women’s Soccer’s three losses have all been by one goal to ranked opponents.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – An early goal from No. 17 Auburn would prove to be the difference despite a second barrage of shots from Long Beach State as the Tigers held on for a 1-0 win over the Beach.
Long Beach State (3-3-0) finished with 14 shots to seven for the Tigers, but a speculative chance early would ultimately carry the day for Auburn (6-0-0). Auburn's Gianna Montini took a long-range shot that bounced off of the crossbar and deflected into the goal to give the Tigers an early lead.
Shots ended up even after 45 minutes, but Long Beach State came out firing in the second half, putting up nine shots to two for Auburn, as the Beach played in the offensive third for the majority of the half.
The Beach would earn two quick corners in succession to start the second half, and then had a great opportunity fall to Taylor Bistline, who settled an entry pass from Kaylee Ramirez and forced Auburn's Sarah Le Beau to make a reaction save to keep the Tigers in the lead.
Katie Pingel quickly followed with another opportunity in the 67th minute, and Ashley Gonzales would have another chance in the 79th minute as the Beach continued to create pressure in the box, but ultimately were unable to find the net in the 1-0 loss.
Long Beach State's three losses have all come to ranked opponents, and all coming by one goal with two occurring on the road.
Long Beach State will remain at home next week, hosting St. John's at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 7 at George Allen Field.
