Freshman Hunter Pate shot an impressive 4-under round of 68 on Wednesday to vault into a tie for third place on the leaderboard, closing out the first tournament of the season for Long Beach State.
FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Long Beach State wrapped up the final round of the Ptarmigan Ram Classic on Wednesday, led by a strong final round from freshman Hunter Pate, who was competing as an individual at the event. Pate shot the low round of the day, firing a 4-under round of 68 to close out the first tournament of her college career. She was the only golfer to shoot below 70 on Wednesday, moving up five spots on the leaderboard to finish in a tie for third place.
"Hunter made a great statement today on being tournament ready," said Long Beach State head coach Joey Cerulle. "And it shows her ability to be a huge part of our program for the next four years."
Pate had a terrific front nine to start her round, going -4 with four straight birdies on holes 5-8. She bogeyed her first two holes after the turn, but recorded birdies on 15 and 18 to get back to -2 for the tournament with a total score of 214. Only two golfers had a better score than Pate, and the freshman was just four shots back of the winner, Boise State's Tara Finigan.
Euna Pak, who was also playing as an individual, finished 18th on the leaderboard with a +3 score for the week.
Freshman Hannah Ko had a solid round on Wednesday, shooting a 1-under round of 71. She birdied consecutive holes three times during her round, including the final two holes of the day to finish the back nine at 3-under. She responded nicely from a tough opening round, dropping her score in each of the ensuing rounds, and was one of just 10 golfers to go under par on Wednesday. Haley Tygret and Holland Shourds each matched their scores from round two, shooting a 74 and a 75, respectively.
The Beach will return to action at the start of next week at the Coeur d'Alene Resort Invitational in Idaho, hosted by Gonzaga. The first two rounds will be played Monday, Sep. 24 with the final round on Tuesday.
