Long Beach State got its fall season underway with the opening round of the Ptarmigan Ram Classic on Monday in Fort Collins, Colo.
FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Long Beach State women's golf opened its 2018-19 season at Colonel Wallenberg's Ptarmigan Ram Classic on Monday, with senior Cara Barker leading the way as the top scorer in the Long Beach lineup. Barker's opening round of 73 has her one shot over par and in a tie for ninth on the overall leaderboard. As a team, Long Beach State sits in 11th after the first of three rounds.
Barker got off to a slow start to her round, sitting 3-over after four holes, but didn't drop a shot the rest of the day. She was 2-under on her second nine, birdieing the 2nd and 5th hole to finish the day in the Top 10 of the leaderboard. Elsewhere in the lineup, Maria Davis shot a 3-over round of 75 to sit in a tie for 22nd after day one.
Long Beach State also had the top two golfers competing as individuals, as junior Euna Pak and freshman Hunter Pate each finished in the Top 10 after the opening round. There are 10 golfers competing as individuals this week, and Pak led them all with her score of 1-under 71. After dropping a shot on her first two holes, Pak responded with a par on the 12th and an eagle on the 13th to spark her solid round. That puts her in a tie for fourth on the overall leaderboard, sitting three shots back of the leader.
Pate also performed well in her collegiate debut, shooting a 1-over 73 to sit in a tie for ninth place.
Long Beach State will continue action on Tuesday morning, again starting on the back nine. LBSU's first tee time is at 8 a.m. PT and live scoring will once again be available via GolfStat.
