The final in Brussels is the culmination of a series of Diamond League events throughout Europe.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State Track and Field Volunteer Assistant Coach Jaide Stepter has qualified for the finals of the IAAF Diamond League, and will run in the 400m dash this Friday in Brussels, Belgium.
The Diamond League is a series of elite track and field competitions held throughout Europe, and was created in 2010 to provide a worldwide version of the Golden League, which had previously only accepted European entries.
"Qualifying for the IAAF Diamond league final is no easy challenge," said Long Beach State head coach Andy Sythe. "It's been a journey for Jaide to reach this milestone in her early career. Our Associate Head Coach (and Jaide's coach) LaTanya Sheffield made the decision to have Jaide compete in her non-specialty, the 400m. To have made it this far in anything other than her signature event (400 meter Hurdles), and to rank 9th in the world and 6th in the Diamond League Final, is nothing short of a testament to Jaide's athleticism, determination, and hard work.
Stepter will compete against four other Americans in the event in Courtney Okolo, Phyllis Francis, Jessica Beard and Shakima Wimbley, as well as Camille Laus from Belgium, Stephenie-Ann McPherson of Jamaica and Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain.
"Sport provides so many opportunities and experiences for athletes," Sythe continued. "To qualify for this final, Jaide competed all over Europe including London and Stockholm. She even met the Pope at the Vatican as toured the circuit this summer. Jaide is experiencing the world stage and all the phenomenal memories that come with it."
