Kim Sowder and her staff welcome four transfers and one additional freshman to the Beach.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State Softball is excited to announce the addition of five more student-athletes to the squad which will compete during the 2019 season. Transfers Brianna Wise, Kellie White, Ashley Coleman and Sydney McCollum along with freshman Samantha Fowler are ready to contribute for the Beach this season.
The newcomers will bring plenty of experience with four juniors complementing a roster with plenty of returning talent.
Brianna Wise is the first of two Division I transfers, coming to the Beach after spending two seasons at Arizona State. Wise hit .263 while making 24 appearances as a freshman while hitting a triple and a pair of home runs.
"Breezy is a solid hitting outfielder who is a hard worker and will bring depth and experience to our outfield and offense after spending two years playing in the Pac-12," said Sowder.
Kellie White will join the Long Beach State pitching staff after playing two seasons at Utah State. White had a stellar freshman campaign, earning First-Team All-Mountain West honors after going 18.7 with a 2.51 ERA and making 93 strikeouts. She added 107 more strikeouts as a sophomore in 131.1 innings pitched for the Aggies.
"Kellie is a great competitor with a strong work ethic," said Sowder. "She throws with a good pace on her ball and has good movement which she's developed in her two years pitching in college."
The Beach is adding another pitcher from the college ranks in Ashley Coleman, who pitched for two years at Cal Baptist. Compiling a record of 28-8 during her two seasons with the Lancers, Coleman was a second-team All-Pac-West selection as well as an NFCA All-West Region selection in Division II.
"Ashley has two years of college experience and will bring maturity and consistency to our pitching staff," said Sowder. "She took last season off from competition, and we're excited about her return to the circle."
Turning the junior college ranks, the Beach will bring in Sydney McCollum after two seasons at Cypress College. McCollum hit .432 as a freshman for the CCCAA State Champions that went a perfect 48-0 in 2017, and then had another monster year last season, hitting .440 with 19 doubles, seven triples and seven home runs.
"Sydney is a great athlete with the versatility to play in any position in the infield or outfield," said Sowder. "She plays with passion and will bring great energy to the team."
Finally, Long Beach State will bring in one additional freshman in Samantha Fowler, a local two-way player for Los Alamitos High School. As a senior, Fowler posted a 0.81 ERA and helped the Griffins to a Sunset League Championship.
"Samantha has a lot of raw power as a pitcher and a hitter and we're working forward to helping her develop this year," said Sowder. "She will bring depth to our pitching staff and offense."
The quintet joins four freshman who signed their NLIs in the early signing period in 2017 in Jacey Bourgeios, Presley Miraglia, Maddy Ruffin and Emily Salazar.
