Former men’s basketball player Glenn McDonald, who continued his career at LBSU as a coach and staff member, will have his jersey retired at this year’s Homecoming Game on Nov. 10.
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- During this year's annual Homecoming Game on Nov. 10, Long Beach State will be retiring Glenn McDonald's No. 20 during a special halftime ceremony at Walter Pyramid. McDonald was a standout during his playing days at Long Beach State from 1971-74, and was a first-round pick in the 1974 NBA Draft. He spent his career with the Boston Celtics and the Milwaukee Bucks, winning the 1976 NBA Championship as a member of the Celtics.
Â
After his playing days, McDonald transitioned into a career in coaching, and would eventually return to Long Beach State in December of 1986 as an assistant coach with the women's basketball program. McDonald took over as head coach of the women's team in 1991, replacing longtime coach Joan Bonvicini. He spent four seasons as head coach and would later became an assistant coach with the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks. McDonald recently retired from Long Beach State after serving as the Director of Intramural Sports at the Student Recreation & Wellness Center on campus.
Â
"We are so excited to honor Glenn McDonald during this year's Homecoming Game, to recognize the tremendous impact he's had at Long Beach State," said Long Beach State Athletic Director Andy Fee. "As a student-athlete, coach, and longtime staff member at this university, Glenn has epitomized what it means to be part of the Beach family, and we are so grateful for all of his contributions."
Â
During his three seasons playing at Long Beach State, McDonald helped lead the team to an overall record of 75-9, with consecutive Sweet 16 appearances in 1972 and '73. He played his first two seasons for head coach Jerry Tarkanian and played for coach Lute Olson as a senior in 1974, earning All-American honors that season. McDonald was elected to the Long Beach State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988.
Â
McDonald's No. 20 will be retired at halftime of Long Beach State's Homecoming Game against Menlo College on Saturday, Nov. 10. He will join Ed Ratleff (No. 42), Lucious Harris (No. 30) and Bryon Russell (No. 32) as the men's basketball players who have had their jerseys retired. Senior guard Breamon Richard currently wears No. 20 for the Beach, and he will retain that number throughout the 2018-19 season to honor McDonald before the number is retired for good.
Â
Single-game men's basketball tickets will be available in October, but season tickets are available right now, starting at just $99 per seat. For more information on season tickets, call or text the Long Beach State Ticket Office at (562) 985-4949.
