Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State threatened late but was unable to undo the early run support from Cal Poly, as the Mustangs came away with a 4-1 win to take the series finale on Sunday.
Cal Poly (23-21, 7-8 Big West) took an early lead, scoring in the top of the first inning. Chelsea Convissar drew a leadoff walk, and after an error kept the inning alive, a wild pitch from Cielo Meza brought home the opening run of the game.
The Mustangs were able to force Meza out of the game early after the sophomore got into another jam in the third inning, but Devyn Magnett pulled Long Beach State (38-10, 13-2) out of trouble in that inning.
The next frame saw the Mustangs open up their lead, however. Three straight singles followed by another uncharacteristic error from the Beach made the score 3-0, and Cal Poly added one more run in the form of a solo home run from Makenna Young.
The Beach made one final push in the bottom of the seventh inning. Nichole Fry drew a one-out walk, and after a single from Naomi Hernandez, walks to Taylor Rowland and Lauren MacLeod brought home a run, and left the bases loaded. Reliever Dakota Casper would pick up the next two outs to end the rally and earn the save as Cal Poly salvaged the final game of the series.
Following the game, Long Beach State honored their seven seniors, and saw some extra excitement following the game as senior Grayce Majam accepted a proposal from her boyfriend as part of the ceremonies.
