SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - A tough weekend on the road for Long Beach State (16-24, 3-6 Big West) concluded with an 8-2 loss to Cal Poly (19-19, 6-6 Big West) on Sunday afternoon. The Dirtbags trailed 5-0 after the first, and despite loading the bases twice in the first three innings, LBSU was unable to mount a comeback on the road.
After starter Adam Seminaris struggled in the first, junior closer Chris Rivera took over in the first inning, making his earliest appearance as a Dirtbag. He was able to work out of a bases loaded jam, recording a three-pitch strikeout before inducing a double play on the first pitch to the next batter. Rivera ended up working three innings, striking out four batters in his longest appearance of the season.
Tyler Radcliffe also worked three innings, allowing no runs on two hits with a pair of strikeouts as LBSU's bullpen was able to settle the game down.
The Dirtbags had plenty of baserunners early but were unable to bring them home. Long Beach State loaded the bases in the first and third innings, but a double play killed the rally in the first, then a groundout and back-to-back strikeouts stranded them loaded in the third.
We're on the board! Steven Rivas rips this single with the bases loaded, scoring Hughey & Jones! LBSU still threatening with just 1 out in the inning. #GoBeach

The offense broke through in the sixth inning as Steven Rivas lined a bases-loaded single over the first baseman to score Jacob Hughey and Leonard Jones. The two RBIs match a career high for the freshman Rivas, who got the start in right field. Chris Jimenez led the Dirtbags with a pair of hits on Sunday. On defense, junior Brooks Stotler got his first look in the infield on Sunday, subbing in at third base.
Next up for Long Beach State is a Tuesday game at USC. LBSU will then host UC Davis for a conference series next weekend.
