ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - After starting the season strong two weeks ago, Long Beach State is back in action this weekend at the Don Kirby Invitational on the campus of the University of New Mexico. The Beach will send 20+ athletes to compete at this weekend's meet, looking to build on the success of its season opening meet.
In the field, Jason Smith leads the way with three events on the docket for this weekend--the sophomore will be competing in the long jump, high jump, and triple jump for LBSU. He'll be joined by Blair Robinson in the long jump and triple jump, while Sal Nasser is also scheduled for the long jump. Rounding out the men's action in the field are Josh Carr and Charlie Vernoy, who will both compete in the men's weight throw on Friday.
On the women's side, De'Ondra Young will compete in the weight throw after winning that event at the Air Force Invitational to start her 2018 season. Other female competitors in the field will be Melanee Williams in the long jump and Meg Sweeney and Bria Palmer in the high jump.
On the track, the women's 200-meter will again be Long Beach State's busiest event of the weekend. Anaya Alexander, Ashleigh Chambers, school record-holder Courtne' Davis, Azaria Hill, Shalee Reynolds, Shyann Reynolds, and Tavajia Richardson will all be competing in the event. Davis, Chambers, Hill, and Elijah McDonald will all compete in the 60-meter dash while Williams and Chambers will participate in the 60-meter hurdles on Saturday.
The Reynolds twins and Richardson will also run the unseeded 400-meter on Friday, while Alexander has a spot in the seeded 400. Those four are also scheduled to run the 4x400 relay after posting the fourth-fastest time in school history in their first attempt two weeks ago.
For the men on the track, Daniel York-Mouton will run the 400-meter and 200-meter on Friday, with teammate Kent Harris joining him for the latter race. Harris will also run in the 60-meter dash along with Nasser and Raleigh Adams, who is also competing in the 60-meter hurdles. Adams recently set the school record in the 60 hurdles at the Air Force Invitational and will look to improve on his altitude-adjusted time of 8.04.
The action gets underway for the Beach at 4 p.m. MT on Friday while Saturday's action begins at 10 a.m. MT with qualifying heats in the sprints. This will be the final indoor event for the Beach prior to the MPSF Championships on Feb. 23-24 in Seattle.
