No. 8 Long Beach State gained two conference victories this weekend with win over No. 20 San Jose State on Sunday afternoon.
SARATOGA, Calif. – No. 8 Long Beach State (9-11, 2-2 GCC) overpowered the No. 20 San Jose State Spartans (6-16, 0-4 GCC) in Saratoga on Sunday afternoon with a score of 11-8. Senior Austin Stevenson broke open the game for the Beach scoring the first goal of the match, followed by junior Austin Stewart. The Spartans would notch a goal in the first quarter as well to have the Beach up by a one goal margin, 2-1.
The Beach would open the second quarter with the same momentum as junior Luke Ritter would strike, along with another goal from Stewart. Stewart would continue to make his mark coming up with another goal followed by senior Lovro Miocevic to have the Beach up at half by a two goal margin, 6-4. We had a Garrett Zaan sighting as the freshman scored in the third quarter, followed by junior Johnathan Wong. At the end of three, the Beach extended their goal by an additional goal to put them up at 8-5. In the fourth quarter, freshman Theodoros Pateros and Zaan scored; along with the fourth goal on the day by Stewart.
Garrett Zaan has now extended his goal streak to nine consecutive games, while Austin Stewart has now brought his goal total of the season to 40 goals. Stewart had 52 goals on the season last year, which landed him on the All-time records list for most goals in a season at number 21. Austin Stewart is still on the hunt to surpass his goal total from last year with about three games left on the season, depending on how things go for the Beach in the Golden Coast Conference Tournament. Wong now has 20 goals on the season, while Zaan has brought his total to 16 on the season.
The Beach will be back home next week on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. against Loyola Marymount and then on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. to close out the season before they head out to the GCC Tournament.
