Long Beach State To Face UC San Diego In NCAA Second Round

The Beach will have a shot of taking down the Tritons as they travel to Stanford on Thursday.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (14-11) water polo is riding a seven-game win streak and will have a shot of extending it on Thursday at they take on UC San Diego (19-5). The Beach is fresh off of their first NCAA Tournament win since 1991 and are hoping to keep their momentum going. UC San Diego had themselves a first round bye and were awaiting the winner of LBSU and Pomona-Pitzer.
The Beach enter the matchup with junior Austin Stewart leading the way with 52 goals on the season, including two goals that Stewart scored in the big win over the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens last week. Freshman Garrett Zaan was lead goal scorer last week as he dominated the Sagehens in the win by scoring four goals putting him at 24 on the season. Senior Keegan Wicken also has 24 goals on the season and bagged a goal last week in the win along with three assists. Junior Johnathan Wong (22 goals) and senior Chandler Kaltenbach (21 goals) round off the top five goal scorers for the Beach.

The Tritons enter the match-up with an overall record of 19-5 and a 6-1 Western Water Polo Association record. The Tritons are led by Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt who has 68 goals on the season.
SERIES vs. UC SAN DIEGO
The Beach own an overall record against the Tritons at 52-17. LBSU has won three out of the last four games against UC San Diego, but the Tritons were victorious in the meeting earlier this season, picking up a 7-5 win in San Diego on Sep. 19. In 2017, the Beach held off UCSD in OT, 11-10. The Beach won both the 2016 and 2015 games by an average margin of five goals.
