Long Beach State erased an early deficit to power past the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens, 12-5, to advance and face UC San Diego.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (14-11) faced an early deficit as the Sagehens (24-8) came out aggressive, but the Beach took the lead near the end of the first quarter and didn't look back. The Beach scored six straight goals to end the first half and ended the game on a 4-0 run to advance with the 12-5 victory.

Pomona-Pitzer scored the first two goals of the game to put the Sagehens up 2-0 at the 5:59 mark in the first quarter. Long Beach State's leading scorer junior Austin Stewart would net the first goal for the Beach with senior Keegan Wicken striking from distance a couple minutes later to tie things at 2-2. Freshman Theodoros Pateros would give the Beach their first lead of the night, 3-2, scoring in the closing seconds of the first quarter.

The Beach would continue to attack as freshman Garrett Zaan would score his first goal of the night at the 6:57 mark of the second quarter. Zaan would strike again later in the quarter followed by freshman Matt Morris to lead the Beach to a 6-2 lead at the half.

The Sagehens would see the back of the net as they scored in the opening minute of the third quarter to inch back into the game, but Zaan would bag another goal to keep the game at 7-3. A couple back-and-forth goals later would end the quarter at 9-5.

Stewart would commence the fourth quarter by drilling a five-meter penalty to put the Beach up 10-5. Senior Lovro Miocevic would find the back of the net at the 5:41 mark of the fourth to give the Beach a six goal lead. Morris would score once more in the closing minutes of the game to seal the 12-5 victory for the Beach.

LBSU was led by Zaan as he capped a four-goal game for the second time this season and bringing his goal total to 24 on the year. Stewart extended his personal streak of scoring a goal in a consecutive game to 11, in addition to bringing his goal total to 52 which ties his total from last year. Others on the scoresheet for the Beach tonight included Wicken, Pateros, Morris, Johnathan Wong, and Miocevic.

With the victory, LBSU extended their win streak to seven straight games. In addition to making the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1991, the Beach also claimed their first victory since 1991. This is also Head Coach Gavin Arroyo's first NCAA Tournament victory as well.

Long Beach State will now face UC San Diego on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 1 p.m. in the second round of the NCAA Tournament hosted by Stanford.
