Long Beach State is excited to bring in a new recruiting class in the fall window.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Kim Sowder and her staff have announced the signing of intent for six incoming recruits, scheduled to join the Beach in time for the 2020 season.
"This class brings talent, versatility, power and speed and will contribute right away to our program. We are looking forward to their arrival next year," said Sowder.
The Beach will bring in two freshman field players, two freshman pitchers, and a pair of junior college players as part of this current recruiting class.
Kylie Cox is an infielder that has led Gregori High School of Modesto to three straight undefeated league championships. The shortstop was a second-team all-league selection last year, hitting .388 with 13 RBI and 22 runs scored.
"Kylie is a talented middle infielder with a solid bat and speed at the plate," said Sowder. "She has a tremendous work ethic and has a great passion for the game."
Shelby Frutoz comes to the Beach from Turlock High School, where she is entering her senior season. Over the last three seasons, the right-handed pitcher has piled up 37 wins with 550 strikeouts and a 1.80 ERA. A two-way player, Frutoz has also hit .392 with 11 home runs over the last three seasons. She has won two straight CCC Pitcher of the Year awards, and has been chosen as an all-league selection in each of her three years at Turlock HS.
"Shelby is a great competitor and has had great success as a two-way player both in the circle and on offense," said Sowder. "She has good movement and pace on all her pitches and brings a lot of power with her bat."
Coming from the juco ranks is Paige Hallam, who will return to California after two years at Howard College in Texas. In her first season in Texas, Hallam earned all-conference and all-region honors while primarily playing second base. A three-time first-team all-league selection at Cypress High School, she was the league MVP as a senior and finished her career with a school-record 127 hits while hitting .358.
"Paige is a natural leader, a solid middle infielder and hits for a high average," said Sowder. "She has a very high softball IQ and has been a leader for every team she's been on."
A freshman outfielder from Newhall, Sara Olson is a four-year letterwinner at West Ranch High School, the same school that both Lauren and Julia Lombardi attended. She has hit over .500 in each of the last two seasons, while also finishing with over 10 stolen bases each year.
"Sara is a crafty triple threat at the plate from the left side and a natural in the outfield with great speed," said Sowder.
Morgan Quinlan is a left-handed pitcher from Chula Vista who spent two years at Mater Dei Catholic High School before transferring to Chula Vista High School. In her two years at Chula Vista, she had an ERA of 2.49 and continues to be a threat both in the circle and at the plate. "Morgan is a combination of size, strength, and power from the left side," said Sowder. "She has a great arsenal of pitches and as she continues to mature and develop she will be very successful at the highest level."
Rylie Seip will join the Beach after starring both at Santiago Canyon College and at Canyon High School in Orange. At Santiago Canyon College as a freshman, she hit .458 with 13 home runs, 42 RBI and 31 stolen bases, earning NFCA All-American honors as well as a first-team all-conference selection in her first season. That came on the heels of a great career at Canyon HS, where she was All-CIF and a three-time all-league selection, hitting over .400 in in her career.
"Rylie's size, speed and athleticism caught our eye immediately," said Sowder. "Offensively she brings power and speed from the left side and defensively she can cover a ton of ground in the outfield."
Long Beach State begins the 2019 campaign this February, as the team looks to continue the success of last season that saw the Beach finish the season ranked in the Top 25 and record 43 wins on the way to the program's 24th NCAA appearance.
