LONG BEACH, Calif. – Freshman Tyler Spencer was recognized for his contribution and strong first season performance for the Beach and was named the Big West Freshman Athlete of the Year.
Spencer finished in the Top 10 at the Big West Conference Championship for the men's program, finishing in eighth place with a new PR of 24:50.5 on Saturday at Carbon Canyon Regional Park. The freshman's performance was the highest finish for any LBSU men's cross country runner since 2013.
"I just wanted to come out here and compete for my team; it ended up better than I expected," Spencer stated.
Over the course of the season, Spencer has been one of the top finishers for the Beach. The men's program competed in their season opener at the Mark Covert classic, where Spencer ran a time of 25:14 in the 8K. His consistency played a huge part for the program and he continued to improve his time at each meet.
Spencer will continue his season and compete at the NCAA West Regionals in Sacramento, California. "We are excited to match up against the big teams; we know that we are one of them too and we can run right next to them," Spencer stated.
