DAVIS, Calif. – Three Long Beach State players recorded double-figure kills and Tyler Spriggs notched a double-double, but the Beach dropped a 3-1 [17-25, 25-21, 18-25, 14-25] decision to UC Davis Thursday night at The Pavilion.
With the loss, Long Beach State falls to 13-11 overall and 5-6 in the Big West, while UC Davis improves to 13-9 and 5-5 in league action.
The Beach were led offensively by freshman Kashauna Williams' 12 kills, while seniors Emma Kirst and Spriggs each added 11. Kirst tied her career-high with 11 kills and Spriggs added 12 digs for a double-double.
Joining Spriggs in double-digit digs were Hailey Harward and Gigi Alex. Harward posted 12 digs for her 18th double-figure dig showing of the year, and Alex, who got the start at libero, finished the match with 11.
Freshman setter Carly Aigner-Swesey was just one dig shy of a double-double as she came away with 32 assists and nine digs, while adding a pair of blocks.
At the net, Kirst was solid once again with four block assists.
Despite Long Beach State's solid numbers, the Beach started off slow as UC Davis opened the match on a 3-0 run and never looked back. The Aggies led throughout the entire first set and came away with a 25-17 win.
Down one set to none, Long Beach State battled UC Davis through six early ties before taking a three-point lead (13-10). However, the Aggies would even the score twice more and the Beach would use a kill off the hands of Kjersti Norveel to take a 21-20 lead that would put them up for good. From there, LBSU earned a 25-21 win as Kirst slammed the final kill
With the match tied one set apiece, the two teams traded points in the third set as the conference foes found themselves deadlocked six times before the Aggies used a 4-0 run to break a 10-10 tie. The Beach battled back and cut the Aggies' lead down to one (15-14) as UC Davis took a timeout, but the break in action proved beneficial to the hosts as they came out and went on a 3-0 run. UC Davis would go on to win set three by a score of 25-18.
The fourth set was much like the third in that the Beach and Aggies found themselves tied up early on. And like with the third, UC Davis was the team that managed to break through on a kill by Emily Allen that sparked a 6-1 run giving the Aggies a 15-9 lead. That run gave UC Davis the momentum it needed as it cruised to a 25-14 victory to win the set and match.
Like the Beach, Davis had three players reach double-figures as Brianna Karsseboom led the way with 18. Allen added 17, while Nicola Moore posted 11. Karsseboom notched a double-double as she added 14 digs. Also recorded a double-double for the Aggies was Paloma Bowman who logged 29 assists and 16 digs.
Long Beach State looks to get back on the winning track on Saturday, Oct. 27 when it takes on UC Irvine at the Bren Events Center at 7 p.m.
