IRVINE, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's volleyball team started out strong, but was unable to come away with a win as the Beach dropped a 3-1 [22-25, 25-16, 19-25, 13-25] contest to UC Irvine Saturday night inside the Bren Events Center in the Black and Blue Rivalry match.
The Beach (13-12, 5-7 Big West) hit .214 in the contest, while the Anteaters (14-8, 8-2 Big West) hit .217. Both teams posted 10.0 blocks, while UC Irvine held the edge in assists (57-45), aces (4-3), and digs (73-63).
LBSU saw two players reach double-figures offensively as Hailey Harward led the way with 13 kills, while Kashauna Williams added 11. Harward added a team-leading 16 digs for her ninth double-double of the season, while also contributing three blocks, one assist, and one ace, while hitting .379 (13-2-29) on the night.
Joining Harward in double-digit digs were freshman libero Carly Hill (14 digs), senior outside hitter Tyler Spriggs (12 digs), and freshman defensive specialist Dylan Dela Cruz (10 digs).
Defensively, Long Beach State received a solid performance at the net as YiZhi Xue led the way with five blocks, while Spriggs added four, and Emma Kirst and Harward posted three each.
The Beach utilized both Mina Andjelkovic and Carly Aigner-Swesey at setter as Andjelkovic dished out 28 assists, while Aigner-Swesey passed out 11.
UC Irvine opened the match with an ace and after a 1-1 tie, led the rest of the way. The Anteaters pushed their lead to eight (18-10), but the Beach chipped away and tallied three straight points to make it a three-point game (22-19). The Anteaters pushed it to set point (24-19), but LBSU again would not go away as the Beach pulled within two (24-22) forcing a UCI timeout. The break in action was just what the Anteaters needed as they came out and won the first set, 25-22.
However, the Beach were riding the momentum from the opening set. The second set began as a back and forth contest, but Long Beach State quickly took control as the Beach used a 3-0 run to go up 11-8. The Beach led the rest of the way, despite the Anteaters attempts to come back. UCI managed to cut LBSU's lead down to one (16-15), but the Beach took a timeout to regroup and came out of the break and went on a 4-1 run highlighted by an ace from Spriggs. With the game in the Beach's favor, Long Beach State capitalized on several attack errors by the Anteaters and closed out the set on an 8-0 run to win, 25-16, and even the match at one set apiece.
Much like the second set, the third set began as a back and forth affair. However, this time around, it was UC Irvine that would break the set open. The Anteaters broke a 9-9 tie on a kill by Abby Marjama which sparked a 3-0 run. UCI led the rest of the set and went on to take a 25-19 win.
The Anteaters came out swinging in the fourth set as they hit .500 (16-2-28) in the frame, while limiting the Beach to a .143 attack percentage (10-6-28). Although the set was close early on, UC Irvine went on a 5-0 run to take an 8-3 lead which would prove to be the difference maker. From that point, the Anteaters kept the Beach at bay and extend their lead to double-digits (18-8) on a kill by Loryn Carter. With the set swinging UC Irvine's way, the Anteaters went on to take the set and match, 25-13.
UC Irvine had three players in double-figures in Carter (16 kills), Makayla Wolfe (15 kills), and Marjama (11 kills). Marjama finished with a double-double after adding 18 digs. Libero Erin Alonso posted 20 digs, while Haley DeSales posted 14. Wolfe led at the net with eight blocks, while setter Ali Koumelis contributed 39 assists, eight digs, and six kills.
Long Beach State looks to snap its three-match losing skid next week when it hosts Hawaii on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. inside the Walter Pyramid.
