
Long Beach State Battles, But Falls to Hawaii in 3-1 Loss

LONG BEACH – The Long Beach State women's volleyball team won the first set, but was unable to hold off Hawaii as the Beach dropped a 3-1 [25-19, 21-25, 17-25, 19-25] decision to the Rainbow Wahine on Saturday night inside the Pyramid.
The Beach (13-13, 5-8 Big West) started the match off strong, holding the 'Bows (16-7, 12-2 Big West) to just .093 hitting in the opening frame, while posting a .310 attack percentage. Long Beach State's strong offensive showing led to an 8-1 run which broke the game open as the Beach took a 13-5 lead. LBSU led the rest of the way and picked up a 25-19 set win to take a 1-0 lead into the second set.
Long Beach State hit .237 in the second frame and limited the 'Bows to .186 hitting and the conference foes battled through seven ties and three lead changes before Hawaii went up for good, 18-17. Long Beach State called a timeout, but the 'Bows held onto the lead and earned a 25-21 win to even the set score.
Hawaii's offense turned on in the third set as the 'Bows hit .455 – their highest attack percentage of the match. Despite the Rainbow Wahine's hitting, Long Beach State stayed close as the Beach and 'Bows saw the match tied six times, before Hawaii went on to win 25-17.
Down two sets to one, Long Beach State continued to battle Hawaii. The fourth set saw six ties, but Hawaii came out on top defeating the Beach, 25-19.
Overall, LBSU out hit Hawaii, .221 to .203 and held the defensive edge as the Beach led in digs (63-57) and blocks (6.0-5.0).
Senior Tyler Spriggs led all scorers with 18 kills on the night as she hit .417 (18-3-36), while Hailey Harward added 10 kills to join Spriggs in double figures. Harward also added a team-best 15 digs for a double-double.
Mina Andjelkovic got the start at setter and contributed 29 assists, while Dylan Dela Cruz added nine helpers and 11 digs, narrowly missing a double-double.
At the net, Emma Kirst and YiZhi Xue led the way with three blocks each. Meanwhile Andjelkovic and freshman Kashauna Williams posted a pair each.
Long Beach State is looking to snap its four-match losing skid as at heads to UC Riverside on Friday, Nov. 9. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
