Senior Tyler Spriggs approached her career high with 21 kills on Friday night in Riverside, leading Long Beach State to a 25-20, 25-23, 21-25, 25-22 victory.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Tyler Spriggs put down a match-high 21 kills, including the final point of the night to give Long Beach State (14-13, 6-8 Big West) a 25-20, 25-23, 21-25, 25-22 win over UC Riverside (8-17, 3-10 Big West) on Friday night at the SRC Arena.
Spriggs' 21 kills were just two shy of her career high, and the senior also added eight digs and three blocks while hitting an efficient .365 thanks to just two errors on 52 swings. Freshman Kashauna Williams added 13 kills on .391 hitting with four blocks, and classmate Allison Williams chipped in 10 kills of her own. Freshman Carly Aigner-Swesey dished out 46 assists and posted eight digs while junior libero Hailey Harward led the match with 23 digs on the night.
The Beach out-hit the Highlanders .423 to .171 in the opening set, benefitting from seven UCR hitting errors. Spriggs had six kills on seven swings in the frame to get LBSU off to a good start in the match.
Things were much closer in the second and the Beach had to battle back from an early 4-0 deficit, but Williams had six kills and Spriggs had five to carry the load offensively. UC Riverside led 22-21 late after a Beach service error, but Long Beach would close on a 4-1 run, ending on a Spriggs kill to make it 2-0 Beach.
After UC Riverside won the third set, LBSU rebounded in the fourth to put the pesky Highlanders away. Trailing 16-14, LBSU went on a key 5-0 run to edge out a 19-16 lead. UCR Would respond however, poking in front at 21-20 after winning four straight. From there, Long Beach State would win five of the next six points with a fastball kill from Spriggs ending a long rally to seal the victory. It was LBSU's fifth straight four-set match, and the win ended LBSU's four-match skid.
The Beach returns to action on Saturday night, hitting the road to face Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m. in the team's penultimate match of the season. Long Beach State will host Senior Night on Saturday, Nov. 17 against CSUN in its regular season finale.
