Long Beach State Travels to UC Davis, UC Irvine
After three home matches last week, the Long Beach State women's volleyball team will hit the road this week for a pair of away contests. The Beach will travel north to UC Davis for a Thursday evening match at 7 p.m., before returning to Southern California for a rematch with UC Irvine on Satruday night at 7 p.m.
About The Beach
• Long Beach State went 2-1 last week after picking up victories over Cal State Fullerton and UC Santa Barbara, before falling in four sets to then-No. 12 Cal Poly.
• The Beach are now 13-10 overall and 5-5 in the Big West.
• LBSU earned its largest margin of victory of the season when it defeated Cal State Fullerton, 25-6, in the first set of a three-set sweep.
• After dropping the first two sets to UC Santa Barbara, the Beach rallied for a five-set come-from-behind victory over the Gauchos in an all-around team effort.
• With a season-high 24-dig performance against UCSB, junior Hailey Harward surpassed the 1,000 career-dig milestone. Harward has now amassed 1,037 in her three-year LBSU career.
• Long Beach State leads the league in blocks per set with 2.40, which puts the Beach in the top 60 in the nation. LBSU is strong at the net as Emma Kirst (1.11 blocks per set) and YiZhi Xue (1.03 blocks per set) are ranked in the top 5 in the league, while Kirst leads the conference.
• Senior Tyler Spriggs has been hot offensively as of late. Two weeks after pouring in a new career-high with 23 kills, Spriggs turned in another 20-kill effort She is averaging 2.77 kills per set to lead the Beach.
• Carly Aigner-Swesey is the team's setter averaging 8.20 assists per set, while adding 1.72 digs per set.

• UC Davis comes into the match against Long Beach State with a 12-9 overall record and a 4-5 Big West Conference mark.Â
• The Aggies have won their last three matches earning victories over UC Riverside (3-2), Cal State Fullerton (3-0), and UC Irvine (3-2).
• Emily Allen is the team's leading scorer with 3.75 kills per set, while adding 3.09 digs per set and 31 total blocks.
• At setter, the Aggies utilize Maddie Merlino (5.97 assists per set) and Paloma Bowman (3.93 assists per set).
• Defensively, UC Davis is led by Malia Bolko's 4.74 digs per set in the backrow and Josie Ough (1.06) at the net.

Long Beach State and UC Davis will meet for the 29th time in program history. The Beach lead the all-time series with a 26-2 record and came out on top in their last meeting on Oct. 6 at the Walter Pyramid.
Scouting the Anteaters
• UC Irvine is 12-8 on the year and 6-2 in the Big West.Â
• The Anteaters are coming off of a 3-2 loss at UC Davis last week and will play CSUN before facing the Beach.
• Offensively, UCI is led by Loryn Carter who averages 2.85 kills per set on .209 hitting. Â
• Pacing the Anteaters' offense is setter Ali Koumelis who is averaging 9.52 assists per set. As a team, the 'Eaters are hitting .220.
• Haley DeDales is the team's libero as she leads the way with 4.74 digs per set.
• At the net, Idara Akpakpa has posted 1.07 blocks per set for the Anteates.
Series vs. UC Irvine
Long Beach State and UC Irvine meet in the Black and Blue Rivalry for the 84th time in program history. The Beach leads the all-time series, 71-12, however the Anteaters took the first meeting of 2018, in four sets.
A Grand Time
Last week against UC Santa Barbara, junior Hailey Harward collected a season-high 24 digs and surpassed the 1,000-career dig milestone. The product out of Phoenix, Ariz., led the Long Beach State defense as she paced the back row. Harward has been solid on both sides of the ball beginning her career at LBSU as a defensive specialist and libero, then transistioning into an outisde hitter role a year ago.
Leader of the Pack
Long Beach State has been solid on blocking defense this season as the Beach have posted 218.0 blocks this season for an average of 2.40 blocks per set. LBSU's blocks per set average is tops in the Big West Conference and is good for 59th in the nation. With the Beach leading the league in blocks per set, it comes as no surprise that Long Beach State's Emma Kirst sits atop the Big West with 1.11 blocks per set as the league leader. Additionally, YiZhi Xue is fifth in the league with 1.03 blocks per set.
Youth Movement
Long Beach State has seen a pair of freshman garner Big West Conference Freshman Player of the Week honors as Allison Martinez claimed the award last month and Kashauna Williams took it home this week. Williams picked up the accolades after a week in which she tallied 31 kills, 10 digs and nine total blocks.Â
Aces Wild
Junior Hailey Harward has been on fire from the service line all season. Harward has racked up a team-leading 36 aces thus far for an average of 0.41 which ranks her third in the league. Additionally, her aces per set mark ranks her in the top 50 in the nation. Earlier this season, Harward racked up a career-high seven aces in Long Beach State's five-set win over Texas Tech. Her seven aces tie her for third in the LBSU single-game record book.
