BOULDER CITY, Nev. -- Long Beach State got off to a strong start at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown on Sunday afternoon, shooting a 4-under 284 as a team to sit in a tie for second place on the leaderboard. All four of Long Beach State's top scorers finished 1-over or better, led by junior Euna Pak who fired a 3-under round of 69 to begin the tournament with a new career-low.
Pak currently sits in a tie for fourth, three shots back of the overall leader after 18 holes. Through her first eight holes, Pak was 2-over for her round, but she was able to pick up five shots over the final 10 holes to sit 3-under. At one point, Pak birdied four of five holes from Nos. 12-16 to start off her solid run. She bests her previous career low round of 70, set last year at the UC Irvine Invitational.
Junior Maria Davis didn't have as busy of a round, collecting 14 pars on Sunday. But Davis also had three birdies to help her to a 2-under score of 70. That round of 70 is also a career-best for Davis, who sits in a tie for eighth after one round. Senior Cara Barker finished with an even-par 72, and classmate Haley Tygret posted a 1-over 73 to round out the scorers for the Beach.
LBSU sits tied with Tulsa for second place, two shots clear of Augusta and Idaho in fourth. Oregon State has the team lead with a first-round score of 280, four shots ahead of the Beach with 36 holes to play.
Round two at the Boulder Creek Golf Club gets underway on Monday morning at 8 a.m. PT with a shotgun start.
