Long Beach State Hosts Cal State Fullerton, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly
The Long Beach State women's volleyball team returns to the mainland with a busy schedule on tap as the Beach host Cal State Fullerton, UC Santa Barbara, and Cal Poly this week. LBSU and Cal State Fullerton will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 16, before the Beach welcome UCSB and Cal Poly on Friday and Saturday, respectively. All three matches are set for 7 p.m.
About The Beach
• Long Beach State is coming off of a four-set loss at Hawaii, and the Beach are 11-9 overall and 3-4 in Big West action.
• The Beach are looking to get back on the winning track after dropping four of their last five matches.
• Long Beach State leads the league in blocks per set with 2.46, which puts the Beach in the top 50 in the nation. LBSU is strong at the net as Emma Kirst (1.13 blocks per set) and YiZhi Xue (1.08 blocks per set) are ranked No. 1 and 2 in the league.
• The Beach have been hot at the service line this season racking up 116 service aces on the year thus far. Hailey Harward has paced LBSU with 0.47 aces per set to rank second in the conference and 22nd in the nation. Harward's 35 total aces are good for 14th in the NCAA.
• In addition to leading the team at the service line, Harward has also been solid on the backrow racking up 219 digs on the year for an average of 2.92 per set. The junior is now just 10 digs shy of hitting the 1,000-career dig milestone.
• Senior Tyler Spriggs has been hot offensively as of late. A week after pouring in a new career-high with 23 kills, Spriggs led all scores with 17 at Hawaii. She is averaging 2.69 kills per set to lead the Beach.
• Carly Aigner-Swesey and Mina Andjelkovic are splitting time at setter this season. Aigner-Swesey is averaging 7.97 assists per set, while Andjelkovic owns a 4.73 assists per set clip.
• At libero, Carly Hill has been pacing the defense with 3.91 digs per set to rank seventh in the Big West.

Scouting the Titans
• Cal State Fullerton comes into the match against the Beach with a 6-14 overall record.
• The Titans are 0-7 in the Big West and are looking to snap a 13-match losing streak.
• Madeline Schneider is the Titans' leading scorer with 3.29 kills per set. She also adds 1.25 digs per set.
• At setter, Courtney Mueller (5.52 assists per set) and Nastassja Bowan (4.00) share duties with Makenzi Abelman who has dished out 3.28 assists per set.
• Defensively, Cal State Fullerton is led by Savahna Costello (3.44 digs per set) and Neena Dimas (3.09) in the backrow, while Haley Carmo (0.81 blocks per set) patrols the net.
Series vs. Cal State Fullerton
Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton will meet for the 98th time in program history and the Beach lead the all-time series 92-5. LBSU has won the last 11 meetings over the Titans, as Cal State Fullerton has not defeated the Beach since 2012.
Scouting the Gauchos
• UC Santa Barbara brings a 12-8 overall record in the match at Long Beach State.
• The Gauchos are 4-4 in the Big West after having dropped three of their last four matches.
• Offensively, UCSB is led by Lindsey Ruddins' 5.42 kills per set on .269 hitting. Ruddins also contributes 2.84 digs per set to go along with 0.57 blocks per set.
• Pacing the Gauchos' offense is setter Olivia Lovenberg who has dished out 858 assists for an average of 11.14 per set.
• Emila Petrachi is the team's libero as she leads the way with 4.79 digs per set.
• At the net, Rowan Ennis has posted 0.83 blocks per set for the Gauchos.
Series vs. UC Santa Barbara
Long Beach State and UCSB will face off for the 109th time in program history. Overall, the Beach lead the all-time series, 70-38. However, UC Santa Barbara came out on top in the last meeting as the Gauchos defeated the Beach in four at the Thunderdome on Sept. 28.
Scouting the Mustangs
• No. 12 Cal Poly enters the match against LBSU with a 17-1 overall record and are undefeated in Big West play with a 7-0 record.
• The Mustangs are riding a 16-match winning streak as they have not lost a match since dropping a four-set match at then-No. 20 Pitt on August. 24.
• The Van Winden sisters are the Mustangs' leading scorers as Torrey averages 4.98 kills per set, while Adlee owns a 2.95 kills per set average.
• Avalon Denecochea is the team's setter as she avereages 10.26 assists per set pacing the offense which is hitting.288 on the year.
• Katherine Brouker leads the defense with 4.45 digs per set, while Madilyn Mercer guards the net with 1.00 blocks per set.
Series vs. Cal Poly
Long Beach State and Cal Poly meet for the 68th time in program history. LBSU leads the all-time series 45-22. However, the Mustangs swept the Beach earlier this season.
Closing in on 1,000
Last week at Hawaii, junior Hailey Harward collected a season-high 20 digs which brought her career total to 990. The product out of Phoenix, Ariz., is now just 10 digs away from reaching the 1,000 career digs milestone. Harward has been solid on both sides of the ball beginning her career at LBSU as a defensive specialist and libero, then transistioning into an outisde hitter role a year ago. This season, she has continued to see action at outside hitter, but has also been a leader defensively as well.
Leader of the Pack
Long Beach State has been solid on blocking defense this season as the Beach have posted 194.0 blocks this season for an average of 2.46 blocks per set. LBSU's blocks per set average is tops in the Big West Conference and is good for 46th in the nation. With the Beach leading the league in blocks per set, it comes as no surprise that Long Beach State's Emma Kirst and YiZhi Xue find themselves among the top two in the Big West. Kirst leads the league with 1.13 blocks per set, while Xue's 1.08 blocks per set rank her second.
Hot Hitting
Offensively, Long Beach State is led by YiZhi Xue's .317 attack percentage as Xue ranks seventh in the Big West. Joining Xue in the Big West top 10 is freshman Allison Martinez who is second on the team with a .308 hitting percentage which is good for eighth in the league. Even more impressively, Martinez owns the highest attack percentage among freshman in the conference and is the only rookie to appear in the Big West top 10.
Aces Wild
Junior Hailey Harward has been on fire from the service line all season. Harward has racked up a team- and conference-leading 35 aces thus far for an average of 0.47 which ranks her second in the league. Additionally, her aces per set mark ranks her 22nd in the nation. Earlier this season, Harward racked up a career-high seven aces in Long Beach State's five-set win over Texas Tech. Her seven aces tie her for third in the LBSU single-game record book.

Long Beach State hits the road next week as the Beach travel north to take on UC Davis on Thursday, Oct. 25. The Beach return to southern California on Saturday, Oct. 27 when they play at UC Irvine. Both matches are slated for 7 p.m.
