LONG BEACH – Long Beach State used a balanced attack and solid defense in an all-around effort Tuesday night as the Beach earned a 3-0 [25-6, 25-21, 25-14] victory over Cal State Fullerton inside the Walter Pyramid.
The Beach (12-9, 4-4 Big West) were led by Allison Martinez and Megan Kruidhof who came off the bench to record double-digit kills. Martinez was one shy of her season-high as she tallied a match-leading 11 kills on .474 hitting (11-2-19), while Kruidhof collected 10 kills for the third time this season while hitting .333 (10-2-24).
As a team, Long Beach State hit .318 as the Beach saw four players hit over .400 in the contest. Freshman setter Carly Aigner-Swesey did a good job pacing the offense as she dished out 28 assists.
Defensively, LBSU limited Cal State Fullerton (6-14, 0-8 Big West) to just .022 hitting. The Titans were kept off balance throughout as the beach received solid passes from four different defensive specialists. Leading the way was freshman Dylan Dela Cruz who came in and collected a team-high eight digs. Hailey Harward, Carly Hill, and Gigi Alex all posted seven digs in the backrow.
Long Beach State started the match strong as the Beach opened the first set on a 5-0 run. LBSU led throughout the first set as the Beach used a 10-0 run, highlighted by an ace by Dela Cruz, to break the game open and take a 19-3 lead over the Titans. From there the Beach cruised to an impressive 25-6 victory.
Much like the first set, the Beach never trailed in the second. Long Beach State opened the frame on a 3-0 run and despite Cal State Fullerton cutting its lead down to one (5-4), the Beach remained in control. The Titans went on a late 4-0 run to make it a three-point game (23-20), but a kill off the hands of Kruidhof sent it to set point and LBSU earned the win, 25-21, on a kill by Kashauna Williams.
The Titans jumped on the board first in the third set and the two teams traded points early on. However, Long Beach State used a 7-0 run to turn a 7-6 deficit into a 13-7 lead that it would not relinquish. From there, LBSU remained in control and kept the Titans at bay as the Beach rolled to a 25-14 win.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Friday as the Beach take on UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. inside the Walter Pyramid.
