HONOLULU, Hawaii –
Long Beach State received strong performances from several players but came up short in a 3-1 [22-25, 19-25, 25-23, 20-25] loss at Hawaii on Friday night inside the Stan Sheriff Center.

Long Beach State (11-9, 3-4 Big West) was led by Tyler Spriggs' 17-kill effort, which led all scorers. Spriggs hit .351 (17-4-37) in the match, while adding five blocks and three digs. Emma Kirst finished the contest with nine kills on .318 hitting. She also led the team with six blocks at the net.

Defensively, the Beach were solid in the backrow as Hailey Harward led the charge with a season-high 20 digs, while Carly Hill added 12 and Carly Aigner-Swesey contributed 10. Aigner-Swesey concluded the match with a double-double as she dished out 33 assists.

Hawaii (10-6, 6-1 Big West), meanwhile had three scorers in double-figures as Norene Iosia and Angel Gaskin each had 12, while Sarah Liva posted 11. Iosia posted a triple-double as she added 26 assists and 11 digs for the Rainbow Wahine.

The Beach got the match started on a 6-1 run, but a Hawaii timeout allowed the 'Bows to regroup. From there, the Rainbow Wahine cut LBSU's lead down to one (9-8). The Beach and the 'Bows found themselves tied at 9-9, before trading points back-and-forth for the next several points. Eventually Hawaii broke the 20-20 tie on an ace which led to the 'Bows closing out the frame on a 5-2 run to win the first set.

The second set began with back-to-back kills from Spriggs and Kirst as the Beach took an early lead. However, the 'Bows tied things up. The conference foes battled each other back and forth in the early part of the set, but Hawaii used a 5-2 run to take a 10-6 lead as LBSU called a timeout. UH led the rest of the way and won the second set, 25-19.

Down two sets to none, Long Beach State batted its way back in the third set. The Beach and the Rainbow Wahine traded leads six times and fought through 11 ties. Finally, with the score deadlocked at 22-22, Long Beach State broke through on a Harward kill. A block by Kirst and Harward gave the Beach a two-point lead (24-22) and pushed it to set point. The Beach closed out the set on a block by Kirst and Kashauna Williams to win, 25-23, and force a fourth set.

In the fourth, the two teams continued their battle with 12 ties and six lead changes, before Hawaii broke a 20-20 tie and closed the set and match on a 5-0 run to win, 25-20.

Long Beach State will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 16 when the Beach host Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m., inside the Walter Pyramid. The match against the Titans kicks off a busy week for the Beach as they host UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
