No. 9 Long Beach State Starts Hot But Unable To Upset No. 1 Stanford

Long Beach State Men’s Water Polo starts strong but Stanford closes out game with a final score of 13-7.

STANFORD, Calif. – No 9. Long Beach State looked to upset No. 1 Stanford as they played visitor, but fell 13-7. LBSU jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the opening minutes of the match. Stanford was able to tie the game at 2-2 but the Beach would respond to put them up 3-2 with 1:17 left in the first period. At the end of one, the score was tied at 3-3. Stanford would be the one to get off to a hot start by putting themselves up 5-3 midway through the second quarter. The Beach would fight back late in the quarter to notch the game back up at 5-5 at the half.

Stanford would get the jump to begin the third quarter putting themselves up at a score of 11-5. The Beach would respond later in the quarter to inch themselves at a score of 11-7 with goals coming from Keegan Wicken and freshman Matt Morris. At the end of the third it would be 12-7. Stanford would score once more to end the game at 13-7.

Junior Austin Stewart would bring his goal total to 21 as he scored in the opening period. Keegan Wicken brought his goal total to 16 with his pairs of goals. Junior Johnathan Wong also scored on the night with a goal in the second period, while senior Max Cusator also scored in the second period. A couple of first timers as well for the Beach as Morris and Zaan both tallied their first goals of the season.

The Beach will be back in action tomorrow, Oct. 12 at 2:50 p.m. to kick-off the MPSF Invite against No. 7 UC Davis.
