Austin Stewart Leads Beach over UC Davis With Spectacular Performance

No. 9 Long Beach State took down No. 7 UC Davis with a final of 13-12 behind Junior Austin Stewart’s spectacular outting.
STANFORD, Calif. – No. 9 Long Beach State opened the MPSF Invite with an upset win against No. 7 UC Davis, 13-12. Austin Stewart had himself a career day scoring a total of seven goals on the day, tying him with a second most in LBSU history. Jeff Colyer holds the record with eight goals back in November 3, 1996 against UC Santa Barbara. The Aggies jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the opening minutes of the first period, but the Beach responded to tie the game at 2-2 at the 5:19 first quarter mark. The Beach and the Aggies would go back-and-forth as the quarter went leaving them tied at 5-5. The Beach would strike first to open the second quarter, but UC Davis would respond to tie the game at 6-6. LBSU would take a 7-6 lead with 2:28 left in the second and score twice more before the half to put them up 9-7.
The Aggies would tie the game back up at 9-9 in the opening minute of the third quarter, but the Beach would strike and take a 10-9 lead. Davis would tie the game once more at 10-10, but the Beach would take an 11-10 lead before the end of the third quarter and not give up the lead again. LBSU would score twice more to hold off the Aggies to end the game at 13-12.
In addition to Stewart's standout performance, senior Keegan Wicken, junior Johnathan Wong, freshman Garett Zaan, and junior Luke Ritter also joined in on the fun finding the back of the net to help the Beach in their victory.
The Beach will face No. 3 USC tomorrow, Saturday Oct. 13 at 8 a.m.
