Mikayla Florez Takes First Place At Pepperdine Invitational

MALIBU, Calif. - Long Beach State redshirt junior Mikayla Florez led the field of 44 runners to cross the finish line in first place at the season opening Pepperdine Invitational at Alumni Park.
Flores covered the 4,000-meter course in a time of 14:41.96 to lead the women's team with five victories as the race was scored as duel meets.
LBSU posted 19 points to defeat CSU Bakersfield with 39 points, followed by LBSU (16) defeating CSUN (40) and the Beach (21) beating meet host Pepperdine (34). LBSU scored 20 points to defeat UC Irvine with 35 and the Beach beating USC, 19-36.
Freshman Mauren Fitzsimmons finished sixth (15:09.92), followed by sophomore Julie Vargas in seventh (15:17.76) and junior Alex Ceballos in eighth (15:19.39). Junior Carline Dgarin placed 13th (15:49.43), freshmen Kelsie Newman and Chloe Masuda finished in 30th and 35th respectively.
On the men's side, the Beach was led by senior George Martinez as he finished in sixth with a 5K time of 16:01.83.
LBSU collected 32 points to fall to CSUN with 23, followed by Pepperdine with 22 points and the Beach with 33 and in the final duel meet, LBSU fell to UC Irvine, 42-17.
Freshman Joey Del Valle finished in 14th (16:28.40), followed by freshman Ezra Sotelo in 17th (16:36.39), sophomore Faustino Diaz in 19th (16:54.64) and junior Galyn Nash in 21st (16:59.78). Junior Patrick Burciago placed 24th (17:09.30) and sophomore Robert Daseler finished in 28th (17:38.77).
The Beach returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 16, traveling to the Inland Empire for the UC Riverside Invitational.
