Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State was picked as one of two at-large selections for the 2017 NCAA National Beach Volleyball Tournament, and will join seven other teams in Gulf Shores, Alabama this weekend for the three-day competition.
Long Beach State was seeded sixth, and will play third seed Pepperdine to open up the tournament on Friday, May 5 at 10 a.m.
USC was named the top seed, and will face South Carolina, while fellow Big West Conference member Hawai’i also made the tournament, facing Florida State in the first round. The final two teams in the field are UCLA and LSU, and fill the other half of the bracket with the Beach and Waves.
The tournament will be a full double-elimination bracket with the exception for the championship match, which will pit the winners bracket champion against the consolation champion for the national title. Every match of the NCAA Tournament will be broadcast live through a variety of platforms. The opening round of matches will all be streamed through NCAA.com, and then TruTV will have daily coverage beginning at Noon PT on both Friday and Saturday. Finally, the NCAA Championship match will be shown live on TBS at 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 7.
In the second season of NCAA Championship competition, Long Beach State will make their first trip to the NCAA Tournament. The 49ers have made three other trips to Gulf Shores under the AVCA National Championship banner during the “emerging sport” phase, where Long Beach State finished as the national runner-up in 2012 and 2015 and as the 2013 AVCA National Champions.
