Long Beach, Calif. - CSUN took an early lead and then broke away late in a 10-1 win over Long Beach State on Sunday, salvaging one win in the final game of the series on Sunday. Julia Lombardi extended her hitting streak to a season-long 11 games with a double in the loss.
CSUN (21-13, 1-2 Big West) got off to a quick start, scoring a trio of runs in the first inning. Leadoff batter Taylor Nate reached on an error to start the game, and then scored on a single from Jessica Alexander. A walk and a single loaded the bases with one out, and then a double from Savannah Horvath scored a pair of runs, while a good cutoff throw from Nichole Fry kept a third from scoring with an out at the plate. That helped Long Beach State (14-18-1, 2-1 Big West) get out of the inning, though the Beach trailed 3-0 after one.
Long Beach State got on the board in the third inning, as Lauren MacLeod singled, and then advanced and scored on a pair of errors from the Matador third baseman Alexander. CSUN would answer in the top of the fifth inning, on an RBI triple from Katie Hooper, making the score 4-1.
The Matadors then broke the game open in the top of the seventh inning, as a single and a walk ended the day of Long Beach State starter Christina Clermont. Both those runners would come home to score, as would four more off of reliever Devyn Magnett before Skie Munoz was able to come on and pick up the final two outs of the inning.
Taylor Troost finished off a complete game in the seventh inning, allowing just two hits from the Beach on the way to the win.
Long Beach State will continue as hosts next week for Big West play, welcoming UC Davis to the LBSU Softball Complex. The series will begin with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, before concluding with a final game on Sunday, April 9 which will also begin at 1 p.m.
