
Long Beach State Enjoys Successful First Day at Beach Invitational

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Hosting one of the premier events in the country and competing against some of the best athletes in the world, Long Beach State came away with a pair of Top 5 showings on the first day of the Beach Invitational.
The Beach saw redshirt sophomore Josh Carr set a new personal record in the men's hammer throw on Friday as Carr launched a mark of 58.66m (192-05.00) to take 12th place in the event. Carr's mark was three inches further than his previous PR, which he set last week at the Big West Challenge.
Coming in behind Carr in the event was sophomore Nicholas Hudson who placed 17th with a heave of 56.98m (186-11.00). The duo from the Beach came in behind Sean Donnely, former LBSU All-American Collin Dunbar, Albert Hughes and former Long Beach State standout Kody Robison who all competed unattached.
Among the collegiate athletes competing, LSU's Johnnie Jackson won the event with a monster throw of 69.27m (227-03.00) coming in only behind Donnely and Dunbar.
Junior Jeffrey Pulcher competed in the men's javelin and earned a Top 25 finish with a distance of 51.27m (168-02.00). Riley Dolezal competing with Nike won that event as he launched the javelin 76.93m (252-05.00).
On the track, the Beach saw George Martinez take fifth in the men's 10K run with a time of 32:03.35. Martinez was the only LBSU representative in the race.
Also competing for the 49ers on the track was Emilo Nunez who came in 14th in the men's 5K with a time of 15:42.33.
Long Beach State's women's squad was equally as impressive as senior Pauline Mandel earned a second place finish in the women's 10K with a time of 37:21.54. Mandel was only second to Idaho's Valerie Mitchell who crossed the finish line five seconds before Mandel.
Sophomore Lexi Ceballos also competed in the race and turned in a fifth-place finish with a time of 38:35.37.
Lastly, the women's javelin saw four Beach competitors that were led by senior Shelby Crider. Crider finished the event with a 15th place showing after earning a distance of 42.53m (139-06.00). Sarah Baker (38.63m, 126-09.00), Riley Cooks (37.01m, 121-05.00), and Cassandra Nychay (36.88m, 121-00.00) rounded out the Beach finishers in the javelin.
The Beach Invitational continues on Saturday, April 15 beginning at 8:30 a.m. with the men's pole vault. The last event of the day is the men's 4x400-meter relay which will conclude the invitational with a start time at 6:55 p.m.
