Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State was back at home in front of a spirited crowd on Wednesday night and looking for the upset over No. 10 Princeton. LBSU's upset bid came up short as Princeton's defense held the Beach scoreless until the fourth period and the Tigers went on to win by a score of 7-2.
It was a low scoring opening period. Princeton got on the board with a goal at the 6:53 mark and again with just eight seconds left. The Beach could not generate any offense as the Tigers took a 2-0 lead into the second.
LBSU had some opportunities on the inside but were blanked again in the second period. Princeton took advantage of a couple of fast break opportunities and struck for two goals to take a 4-0 lead at the half.
The Beach had some good looks and shots that glanced off the post in the third but nothing found the back of the cage. Princeton scored twice for the third straight period to take a 6-0 advantage into the fourth.
The Tigers scored first in the fourth period on a power play opportunity. But Long Beach State would score its first goal at the 3:22 mark as Alexandra Massier converted from the inside off a nice setup by Cara Vejsicky. With 1:31 remaining, Virginia Smith stole the ball from Princeton and heaved a shot halfway down the pool with the Tigers' goalie drawn out and scored. Even with the late game excitement, Princeton came out on top 7-2 over the Beach.
Goalie Eirini Patras finished with six saves and two steals.
Long Beach State travels to Northridge on Saturday for a Big West matchup against the Matadors at noon. LBSU will look to even up its conference record at 1-1.
