Beach Tennis Prevails in Lengthy Battle with BYU

HONOLULU - Long Beach State women's tennis earned its fifth win in a row on Friday, but it didn't come easily. The Beach went up against a game BYU squad, and also had to fight through five rain delays in order to come out with a 4-3 neutral site victory at the University of Hawai'i. LBSU improves to 5-1 with the win as BYU falls to 2-4.
After dropping the doubles point, the Beach needed to rally in singles action. Senior Laura Eales earned a comfortable 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6 to get things going in Long Beach's direction, and the top three in the lineup each won their matches to push the 49ers over the top.
At No. 3 singles, freshman Maren Helgo won her match by default after taking the first set, 6-3. At the top of the lineup, Maeva Razakasoa claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win, but the match was tied at 3-3 when it came down to Julie Gerard's match at No. 2 singles. The senior had won the first set 6-4, dropped the second set 4-6, and was able to win the decisive third set 6-4, capping it off with an incredible drop shot.
LBSU returns to conference action on Saturday, facing the host Rainbow Wahine at 2 p.m. PT. The teams are tied for first place in the Big West standings, each at 2-0, setting up what should be an exciting day of tennis in Honolulu.
