EUGENE, Ore. - Junior Robert Marlow kicked off the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships for Long Beach State with a 24th-place finish in the men's hammer throw Wednesday afternoon at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.
Marlow opened the competition with a toss of 197-06, which ended up being his best of the day as he fouled on his next two attempts. He finished 12th in Flight 1.
The top-nine finishers at the end of the two flights advanced to the finals for three more throws each. Nick Miller, a senior from Oklahoma State, ended up claiming the national title at 242-08.
Marlow, who came to the Beach as a walk-on, had a breakout season in 2016, earning All-Big West honors and placing 10th out of 48 in the men's hammer at the NCAA West Preliminary. The Ventura, Calif., native threw for over 200 feet in eight meets and had a top-10 showing in every regular-season competition. Marlow picked up an individual victory at the USC Trojan Invitational (March 18) with a lifetime-best 215-02. That mark ranks third in school history.
Long Beach State has two more athletes set to compete at this week's NCAA Championships. Senior Fatima Vergara will be in the women's hammer throw at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, while junior Riley Cooks is entered in the heptathlon, which will run on Friday (June 10) and Saturday (June 11). Both events will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
