Tulsa, Okla. - In the opening round of the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles Championship on Wednesday, Long Beach State junior Maeva Razakasoa came up short in a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Mississippi State's Jasmine Lee.
The reigning and two-time Big West Player of the Year was in a 2-0 hole early and was unable to battle back in the first set. In the second frame, trailing 5-2 and with Lee serving for the match, Razakasoa was able to battle back and break Lee's serve to pull within 5-3. However, Lee was able to finish the match in the next game as Razakasoa's final shot went long at 40-40 to give Lee the victory.
Lee is listed as a 9-16 seed in the 64-player tournament and is ranked No. 13 in the country by the ITA, while Razakasoa checks in at No. 102.
Razakasoa ends her junior season with a 27-10 record, going 2-3 against nationally ranked opponents. She was 18-4 during the dual match schedule and 9-6 in tournament play. Razakasoa has 86 career singles wins at Long Beach State, winning 76.8% of her matches. This was the fifth appearance in the NCAA Singles Championship in Beach Tennis history, as Razakasoa joins former 49ers Jing Chen, Hannah Grady and Anais Dallara as the only players to reach the NCAA Singles Championship.
