Long Beach State Drops Road Match at Cal Poly

Beach falls 6-1, looks to rebound at UC Santa Barbara tomorrow
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Long Beach State dropped a 6-1 decision to Cal Poly on the road Tuesday at the Ronca Tennis Center, moving to 11-8 overall and 4-2 in Big West play.
The Beach opened the match on a strong note, securing the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Cecilia Costa and Paulina Franco Martinessi battled to a 7-6 (7-5) win at the top spot, while Pamela Badillo and Thea Jagare added a 6-4 victory to clinch the early 1-0 advantage.
In singles, Cal Poly controlled the match from start to finish, sweeping all six courts to secure the team victory. The Mustangs picked up straight-set wins on courts two and three, while also prevailing in a pair of three-set battles to extend their lead.
Costa pushed her match to three sets at the No. 1 position, responding after dropping the first set before ultimately falling 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Martinessi also forced a third set at No. 4 in a tightly contested match that included a tiebreak, but Cal Poly closed it out late.
Long Beach State will look to regroup quickly as it heads to UC Santa Barbara for another Big West matchup tomorrow.
