Long Beach, Calif. - The NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles Championship begins Wednesday in Tulsa, Okla., and the tournament draw for the 64-player field was released Tuesday to reveal Wednesday's opening round matchups. Long Beach State junior Maeva Razakasoa begins the tournament against Jasmine Lee from Mississippi State, playing at 3:30 p.m. Central Time.
Razakasoa is the fourth Beach player to receive an invitation to the singles championship, and it will be the fifth appearance by a 49er in program history. The two-time Big West Player of the Year received the conference's automatic bid to the tournament, and she enters as the No. 102 ranked player in the nation according to the ITA. Razakasoa has a singles record of 27-9 this year, including an 18-4 mark during the dual season where she played exclusively at the No. 1 spot in the lineup.
She draws a difficult first round opponent in Lee, who is currently ranked No. 13 in the nation in the same singles rankings. She is Mississippi State's top player with a singles record of 29-11 this year. Lee has played 34 matches against ranked competition this season, going 10-7 in those matches, including a five-match winning streak to close out the dual season. Her last 17 matches have come against ranked opponents and Lee has been ranked as high as No. 9 in the country back in February.
As a team, Mississippi State reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament before losing 4-2 against Texas Tech. Lee's match at No. 1 did not finish, but was tied late in the third set when the match was decided. Lee is listed as a 9-16 seed, as individual seeds are not specified beyond the top eight players.
The winner between Razakasoa and Lee will face off against the winner of the match between Taylor Davidson (Stanford) and Kaitlyn McCarthy (Duke). Each day brings a new round, so the second round matches will take place on Thursday, May 26, leading up to the championship match on Monday, May 30.
The tournament will be held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, hosted by the University of Tulsa. Live scoring of the championships can be accessed via the NCAA Women's Tennis page.
