Dirtbags Sweep UC Davis For Ninth Straight Win

Davis, Calif. - The Dirtbags remained dominant on Sunday afternoon, winning in impressive fashion over UC Davis (16-34, 4-17 Big West) for the second day in a row. Long Beach State (35-18, 14-7 Big West) pounded out 17 hits on its way to an 11-1 win against the host Aggies. It's the ninth straight win for the Dirtbags, who have now completed back-to-back weekend sweeps.
With 35 wins, this becomes the winningest Dirtbags team of the Troy Buckley era, surpassing the 34-win team from 2014. Long Beach State still controls its own destiny for a potential Big West championship, needing to win the final series of the year against Cal State Fullerton next weekend at Blair Field. The Dirtbags are 1.5 games back of the Titans entering Fullerton's game against Hawai'i on Sunday night.
Long Beach State had six players record multiple hits on Sunday, including another big day from sophomore Brock Lundquist who extended his hitting streak to 17 games. Lundquist was 3-for-4 with a walk on Sunday, including a two-run home run to cap off a five-run sixth inning. That performance follows his five-hit day yesterday, giving him nine hits in the series and two home runs on the week.
Luke Rasmussen drove in four runs to extend his team lead; he now has 44 on the season. Zack Domingues recorded three hits in his first three at-bats, matching his career high with three runs scored. Garrett Hampson hit a pair of doubles in his first two trips to the plate, giving him 207 career hits. He is now 9th on Long Beach State's all-time hits list, passing former big leaguer Bobby Crosby.
The middle of the order produced on Sunday, with the No. 2-6 hitters (Domingues, Hampson, Rasmussen, Lundquist, and Daniel Jackson) combining to go 13-for-24 with nine runs and eight RBIs.
Tanner Brown picked up his seventh win of the year, throwing six innings while allowing one unearned run. He scattered five hits, working around a pair of walks while recording three strikeouts.
The Dirtbags earned a double-digit win for the second straight day, the first time they've done that this season, and they swept a road series for the first time in over two years. LBSU has also won nine straight games for the first time since going on a 13-game winning streak back in 2007. The last Dirtbags sweep at UC Davis came during the 2006 season.
Long Beach State returns home for its final regular season series of the year, starting Thursday against Cal State Fullerton. First pitch at Blair Field is scheduled for 6 p.m. for the series opener. Friday's game will also be at 6 p.m. and the season finale will be Saturday at 1 p.m. with the game televised on Fox Sports Prime Ticket.
NOTES: Brooks Stotler started in center field and went 2-for-4 at the plate, while also making a fantastic diving catch in deep right center … Hampson's multi-hit day was his 23rd of the season … Rasmussen registered his 14th multi-RBI game, which leads the team … Jarren Duran has now recorded a hit in eight straight games from the leadoff spot … LHP Kyle Brown recorded two strikeouts in an inning of work on Sunday, striking out four of the six batters he faced in the series.
