Long Beach, Calif. - Third baseman Darian Tautalafua and starting pitcher Christina Clermont both picked up more honors on Thursday as the pair were named to the NFCA All-Region Team for the West Region.
Encompassing Arizona, Nevada, and most of Southern California, the West Region is traditionally one of the most competitive for postseason honors, and saw Long Beach State's two first-team All-Big West honorees named to the Second Team. Tautalafua led the Big West in slugging percentage, home runs and RBI in a tremendous season, guiding the Beach to the NCAA Regionals with a .347 batting average. Setting the single season marks at LBSU with 15 home runs and 54 RBI and counting, Tautalafua also has broken career school records in home runs, RBI, walks and runs scored as a senior.
Clermont once again had to play a big part in the pitching success of the 49ers. Posting a 22-10 record and a 2.11 ERA this season, Clermont's 195 strikeouts so far are the second-most in a single campaign at the Beach. She was involved in every shutout this season for Long Beach State, and led the conference in strikeouts, wins and saves this season.
For Clermont, this is her second selection to the All-Region team, as the junior also received second team honors a season ago, while the honor is the first for Tautalafua. It also marks the first time the Beach has had two players on the second team or higher since the 2005 season.
Long Beach State begins postseason play on Friday, when the Beach plays Baylor at 6 p.m. on ESPN2 in the Eugene Regional.
