Beach Off to Strong Start at Adidas/Steve Scott Invitational

IRVINE, Calif. - The Long Beach State track & field team started the Adidas/Steve Scott Invitational with a handful of distance and field events Friday evening at UC Irvine's Anteater Stadium.

Sophomore Kennedy Krueger cleared a lifetime-best 12-02 to tie for eighth in the top flight of the women's pole vault. That mark gives her sole possession of No. 8 in program history.

Sophomore Lauren Bartsch was first in her flight of the pole vault, reaching a season-best 11-07.75. Classmate Jessica Henslee and redshirt freshman Lea Fong also hit a season-best 11-07.75 to place third and fourth, respectively.

The senior duo of Fatima Vergara and Marina Shelton advanced to the final round of the hammer throw where they finished fifth and sixth. Vergara got out to a strong start with a toss of 189-07, a mark that stood as her best of the day. Shelton wasn't far behind at 186-07, which she recorded on her second and sixth attempts. Senior Chaylene Bruggeman just missed out on the finals as she came in 11th (167-03).

Senior Koquise Richards took ninth in the long jump with a season-best 17-06.25, while classmate Nikki Puerner was 10th (17-02).

The 49er trio of senior Kody Robison, junior James Hubbard and junior Robert Marlow led the men in the field events as the top-three collegiate finishers in the hammer throw. Robison surpassed the 200-foot mark in his ninth-straight outing as he led the way with a toss of 209-05. Hubbard was right behind him with a personal-record 207-07, and Marlow rounded out the group at 202-01.

On the track, junior Kathleen Dunne was the runner-up in the women's steeplechase, crossing the finish line in 11:05.52. Senior Cameron Ford also took fifth in his first steeplechase event (9:36.89).

Sophomore Kevin Ramirez was LBSU's top finisher in the men's 5000m, clocking in with a personal-best 14:39.69. Senior Cameron Pantoja was also seventh (14:51.42), and freshman Andres Barragan placed 10th overall in his first 5K of the season (15:01.34).

Junior Ashley Carrera led the Beach in the women's 5000m with an eighth-place showing (17:57.31).

Long Beach State concludes the Adidas/Steve Scott Invitational tomorrow and then heads north to Stanford for the Payton Jordan Invitational on Sunday, May 1.
