LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Long Beach State's throws squad continued to shine on the first day of the USC Trojan Invitational as they established five marks that rank among the top-10 in all of NCAA Division I this season.
Junior Robert Marlow, who recorded a then lifetime-best 203-10 at last week's Anteater 4-Way Meet, edged teammate and senior Kody Robison for his first individual victory of the year. Marlow took the lead on his first throw of the day and held it until Robison pulled out front in the fifth round. Marlow then threw for a lifetime-best and meet-winning 215-02 on the final attempt of the competition. That is the top mark in the nation and ranks third on the LBSU all-time charts.
Robison was the runner-up with a personal-record 214-01, which ranks second in all of NCAA Division I and fourth in school history.
The Beach has finished first and second in the men's hammer throw in all four of its meets this year.
Junior James Hubbard led the way in the discus with a runner-up showing. He was the top collegiate finisher, however, as he came in behind only Niklas Arrehenius, a 2008 Olympian who was competing unattached. Hubbard threw for a personal-record 181-08, which is the third-best mark in the nation.
On the women's side, senior Fatima Vergara won the hammer throw with a personal-best 193-11. Vergara, who redshirted last year after winning the conference title in 2014, registered the top NCAA Division I mark this season and moved up one spot to No. 3 in the 49er record books. Senior Brianna Viltz (164-09) and sophomore Cassandra Nychay (140-09) also established season bests.
Vergara added a lifetime-best 159-04 to come in seventh in the discus. Her toss ranks ninth in program history.
Long Beach State continues the USC Trojan Invitational at Loker Stadium tomorrow.
