Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State was one of eight teams selected to compete for the 2015 AVCA National Sand Volleyball National Championship, as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association on Monday. The Beach will enter the tournament as the No. 7 seed.
Long Beach State was the 2013 national champion, and joins two-time national champion Pepperdine in the field along with USC and Hawai'i from the West, while Florida International, Georgia State, Florida State and Stetson round out the field competing for the championship in Gulf Shores, Ala.
The 49ers, as the No. 7 seed, will face No. 2 seed Hawai'i in the quarterfinals beginning on May 1 at 7 a.m. Pacific Time. The competition will continue through Saturday, May 2 with the finals being held at 2 p.m. PT.
USC was named the top seed, while Florida International was the No. 3 seed and Pepperdine was given the No. 4 seed. No. 5 Georgia State, No. 6 Florida State and No. 8 Stetson rounded out the invitational field.
In addition to the team competition, Long Beach State's top two pairs are automatically entered into the pairs competition by virtue of the 49ers' team selection. Top flight pair teammates Delainey Aigner-Swesey and Chelsea Cabrajac are each making their third appearance in the pairs championship, while Tyler Jackson makes her second straight appearance with her freshman partner Anete Brinke.
That competition will be held on Sunday, May 3, as the top 18 pairs in the country will play in a single-elimination bracket with two play-in matches.
Television coverage of the championships will be shown via a delayed package, premiering on Saturday, May 23 at 10 a.m. on CBS Sports Network.
