
Beach Water Polo Falls to Hawai'i In Overtime

Long Beach, Calif. - No. 12 Long Beach State lost to No. 6 Hawai'i 3-4 in overtime in their third Big West Conference match. Goalkeeper junior Alexis Butler showed passionate defense in the cage with 11 saves and senior captain Justine Morgan won all the sprints at the beginning of each quarter.
In the first quarter, the Rainbows scored the first goal off a six versus five man up power play. In return, freshman Alexandra Massier scored her first goal off the perimeter to tie the match at 1-1. Hawai'i then scored once more to take the lead at 1-2.
In the second quarter, freshman Virginia Smith scored from the perimeter with a lob shot to tie the match at 2-2 at halftime. During the third quarter, the Beach held a strong defense and Butler did not let any goals go by her. Massier scored her second goal from a counter attack to lead the Beach at 3-2.
In the fourth quarter, the Rainbows scored another goal to tie the match at 3-3 and to take Long Beach State into overtime. In the first overtime period of three minutes, none of the teams scored, but in the second period, Hawai'i scored one more goal to seal the Big West Conference match win at 3-4.
Long Beach State will play again Thursday, April 16 against No. 5 UC Irvine at 7 p.m. at the Ken Lindgren Aquatic Center.
