
Long Beach State Off to Strong Start at Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa - Long Beach State posted three top-15 finishes on its first day at the prestigious Drake Relays.
Sophomore Willie Alexander, who reached the 25-foot mark for the third-straight meet, came in third out of 26 collegiate competitors in the men's long jump. He hit an even 25-00 on his first attempt of the day, and later matched that distance in the finals. Last week, Alexander recorded a leap of 25-00 at the Beach Invitational and established a lifetime-best 25-05.25 at the Mt. SAC Relays.
Dylan McCloskey, Cameron Glasgow, Michael Perez-Rogers and Jahmani Lockett ran the fourth-fastest 4x400 relay time in school history, clocking in at 3:08.39. They finished 12th overall, just four spots out of qualifying for Saturday's finals. The quartet also placed 19th in the 4x100 relay (41.24).
Aundrea Yancy cleared 5-07.75 to take 11th in the women's high jump.
The 49er men will compete in the sprint medley relay, while Alexander is entered in the triple jump on Saturday at Drake Stadium.

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The LBSU women's throws squad was also in action at the UCSD Triton Invitational in La Jolla on Friday.
Fatima Vergara led four 49ers in the hammer throw as she was 19th out of 48 competitors with a toss of 173-05. Marina Shelton also placed 23rd overall (166-09), while Melanie Samvalian notched a personal-record 156-06.
Jerrilynn Stanwood was Long Beach State's top finisher in the discus, coming in 23rd with a personal-best 147-03. Samvalian (145-08) and Brianna Viltz (138-03) also established lifetime bests.
A full day of events is set to get underway at 10 a.m. Saturday at Triton Track & Field Stadium.
