The 42nd ranked Long Beach State women's tennis team finished out the LBSU Winter Invitational on a high note as eight additional victories were collected on Sunday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.

Facing its third straight day of competition, a young Beach squad came out in doubles play to pick up three wins right away over Portland. At the No. 3 spot, freshmen duo Holly Reid and Laura Eales shut out Katy Krauel and Gabrielle Gorence while teammates Gabriela Tilkeridisova and Hayley Thompson also dominated their opponent of Marina Reimers and Emily Mahairas to win 8-2. The third doubles win was picked at No. 1 where Ebba Unden and Maeva Razakasoa beat Jalena Lazarevic and Sophie van den Aarrsen 8-6.

Singles play proved to be tougher as LBSU took on the only other ranked tournament team in No. 62 Denver. The 49ers took victories in five spots including the top three. Ebba Unden, playing at No. 1, defeated Caroline Schnell 6-3, 6-4 while Maeva Razakasoa beat Maureen Slattery 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2. Julie Gerard came back in three sets to defeat Kathryn Hughes 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3 at No. 3. The Pioneers picked up wins at No. 4, 5 and 6, but the 49ers capitalized to win at No. 7 where Holly Reid defeated Michelle Garpenlov 6-3, 6-0. Hayley Thompson played Mari Taslagyan of Cal State Northridge in the No. 8 slot where she won 6-1, 6-4.

"Over the past three days, we achieved our goals," Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello said. "Our freshmen experiences three mock dual match formats and we were able to identified our strengths and also areas for improvement. I'm pleased with our performance and our competitiveness this weekend."

Beach tennis will travel on the road for its first dual matches of the season as the 49ers head to Honolulu next weekend. First, LBSU will play No. 45 Washington on Sunday and then open conference play against Hawai'i on Monday. Both matches are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. PST.
