LBSU Grinds Out 5-2 Win Over No. 71 Louisville

LONG BEACH, Calif. -
No. 37 Long Beach State extended its home winning streak to seven matches with another hard-fought victory over a ranked opponent as the 49ers beat No. 71 Louisville 5-2 Thursday afternoon at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
The Cardinals (10-5, 1-0 Big East) took the first point of the day with doubles victories at the No. 1 and 3 spots. Sarah Cantlay and Klaudia Malenovska helped LBSU (11-3, 4-1 Big West) avoid the sweep by beating Rebecca Bodine and Stefanie Villajuan 8-2 at the No. 2 spot.
Behind 1-0, the 49ers tied it up as sophomore Karolina Rozenberg earned her 12th straight-set singles victory by beating Villajuan, 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Anne-Sophie Willems then gave LBSU the 2-1 lead behind a 6-1, 6-4 win over Rebecca Bodine. However, Louisville came back to tie the match up at 2-2 as Sarah Cantlay fell to Manuela Velasquez, 6-4, 7-5, snapping her seven-match winning streak.
Nearly 75 minutes later, Anna Jeczmionka broke the tie with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3 victory over Mandy Brown at No. 5. Ebba Unden then followed suit and sealed the win for the 49ers with her 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Julia Fellerhoff. Senior Klaudia Malenovska claimed the final LBSU point of the day with her win over Rebecca Shine, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3).
The win is Long Beach State's second consecutive victory over a ranked opponent in the last seven days. The 49ers will play two more non-conference home matches next week as they play host to Iowa on Thursday and Wyoming on Friday. Both matches, played at the Rhodes Tennis Center, will begin at 2 p.m.
